What Does a Healthy Dog Stool Look Like?

A practical guide to what owners can observe in their dog's stools, including consistency, frequency and colour — and when a change is worth discussing with your vet.

Introduction

A dog's stools can provide useful clues about what is happening within the digestive system.

No two dogs are exactly the same, and there is no single “perfect” stool that every healthy dog will produce every day.

However, many owners become very familiar with what is normal for their own dog.

Consistency, colour, frequency and ease of passing stools are all useful things to notice.

The most important thing is often not one isolated stool, but whether there has been a clear or persistent change from your dog's usual pattern.

Understanding the issue

What is happening?

By the time food becomes stool, it has travelled through the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Nutrients have been digested and absorbed, water has been removed, and material that remains has been influenced by both the dog's own digestive processes and the microorganisms living within the gut.

The large intestine plays an important role in water absorption and in forming stool.

This is why changes in transit time, diet, hydration or the material reaching the lower gut can all influence what the final stool looks like.

A well-formed stool generally reflects a balance between digestion, water handling, gastrointestinal movement and the material remaining at the end of the digestive process.

A number of everyday factors can influence stool appearance.

Diet

Changes in food, treats, chews or table scraps can alter stool consistency and colour.

Sudden dietary change

Moving quickly from one food to another can temporarily change digestion and stool quality.

Amount eaten

Eating considerably more or less than usual can change both stool volume and frequency.

Water intake

Hydration can influence stool consistency.

Activity and routine

Exercise, excitement, travel and changes in routine can sometimes coincide with changes in bowel habits.

Scavenging

Dogs are very good at eating things their owners did not intend them to eat. This can make an otherwise unexplained stool change much easier to understand.

The useful question is often: what else changed at around the same time?

There are several simple things owners can observe.

Consistency

A typical stool is generally formed, holds its shape and is easy to pick up without being excessively hard or dry.

Frequency

Some dogs pass stools once or twice a day, while others go more frequently. Your dog's normal pattern matters more than comparing them with another dog.

Colour

Brown is the usual colour, although shade can vary with diet.

Volume

A noticeable change in the amount of stool can sometimes coincide with changes in food intake, diet or digestibility.

Ease of passing

Notice whether your dog appears comfortable or whether there is repeated straining.

Changes over time

One unusual stool is different from a pattern that continues for several days.

Keeping track of what is normal for your own dog can make changes much easier to recognise.

Everyday considerations

If you notice a mild change in your dog's stools, it can be useful to think through the previous day or two.

Has their food changed?

Have they had new treats or chews?

Could they have scavenged something?

Have feeding times changed?

Have they been travelling, staying somewhere different or experiencing a change in routine?

It can also help to keep meals and treats reasonably consistent while you observe what happens.

Avoid making several dietary changes at once, because that can make it difficult to work out which change made a difference.

For dogs that are otherwise bright, comfortable and behaving normally, observing patterns can often provide useful context.

Speak to your vet if you are concerned about your dog or if stool changes are persistent, severe or accompanied by other changes.

Particular reasons to seek veterinary advice include:

blood in the stool
black or very dark tar-like stools
repeated vomiting
marked lethargy
obvious discomfort
repeated straining
refusal to eat
unexplained weight loss
signs of dehydration
very frequent or persistent loose stools
a sudden significant change in a puppy, elderly dog or dog with an existing health condition
