Why Does My Dog Have Loose Stools?

Loose stools can happen for many reasons, from sudden dietary changes and scavenging to changes in routine or digestion. The most useful clues are often how long the change lasts, what else has changed and how your dog seems overall.

Loose stools are one of the most common digestive changes dog owners notice.

Sometimes the explanation is straightforward: a new food, an unfamiliar treat, something scavenged on a walk or a sudden change in routine.

At other times, there may be no obvious trigger.

Stool consistency is influenced by several processes happening throughout the digestive tract, including digestion, water absorption, gastrointestinal transit and microbial activity.

That means there is rarely one single explanation for every episode.

The most useful starting point is to look at the pattern: when it began, how significant the change is, whether anything else has changed and how your dog seems in themselves.

What is happening?

Stool consistency depends partly on how much water remains in the material reaching the end of the digestive tract.

The large intestine normally absorbs water as digestive contents move through it.

If material moves through more quickly than usual, there may be less opportunity for water to be absorbed, resulting in a softer stool.

Diet also matters.

Different foods vary in digestibility, fibre content, fat, protein and carbohydrate composition. These differences can influence both gastrointestinal transit and the material available to microbial communities further along the gut.

The microbiome contributes too.

Microorganisms ferment substrates reaching the large intestine and produce a wide range of metabolites.

Stool consistency is therefore the result of several interacting processes rather than one isolated part of digestion.

What can influence it?

There are many everyday reasons stool consistency may change.

A change of food

Moving quickly from one diet to another can temporarily alter digestion and the gastrointestinal environment.

New treats or chews

It is easy to focus on the main food while forgetting everything else a dog eats.

Scavenging

Food found outdoors, table scraps or access to something unusual can produce an obvious change.

Eating more than usual

A large meal or an unusually treat-heavy day can affect stool consistency and volume.

Changes in routine

Travel, kennelling, visitors, changes in exercise or other environmental changes can coincide with altered bowel habits.

Individual sensitivity

Some dogs appear able to tolerate dietary variation easily, while others produce noticeable digestive changes after relatively small alterations.

What matters most is often whether you can identify a change that happened shortly before the stool changed.

What can you observe?

A few simple observations can provide useful context.

How loose is it?

There is a difference between a stool that is slightly softer than normal and completely watery diarrhoea.

How often is your dog going?

Notice whether bowel movements are happening much more frequently than usual.

How long has it lasted?

A single unusual stool is different from a persistent pattern.

Is there blood or mucus?

These are worth noting and may influence whether veterinary advice is appropriate.

What has your dog eaten recently?

Include treats, chews, table food and anything they may have scavenged.

How is your dog otherwise?

Appetite, energy, comfort, drinking and body weight provide important context.

Is this a recurring pattern?

Repeated episodes are worth discussing with your vet even if your dog seems otherwise well.

If your dog is otherwise bright and comfortable and the change is mild, start by thinking about recent diet and routine.

Try to keep the diet consistent while you observe what happens.

Avoid introducing several new foods, treats or supplements at the same time, as this can make it much harder to understand what is influencing stool quality.

Make sure fresh water is always available.

It can also be helpful to keep a simple record of:

  • what your dog ate
  • stool consistency
  • frequency
  • any new treats or chews
  • anything unusual that happened that day

Patterns can become much clearer when written down.

If loose stools persist, recur frequently or are accompanied by other changes, veterinary advice is appropriate.

Speak to your vet if loose stools are persistent, severe, recurrent or accompanied by other concerning changes.

Reasons to seek veterinary advice include:

  • blood in the stool
  • black or tar-like stools
  • repeated vomiting
  • marked lethargy
  • obvious abdominal discomfort
  • refusal to eat
  • unexplained weight loss
  • signs of dehydration
  • very frequent watery diarrhoea
  • repeated straining
  • a significant change in a puppy, elderly dog or dog with an existing health condition

If your dog seems significantly unwell, do not wait for the stool to return to normal before seeking advice.
