CaniNectar Research: Two-Phase Professional Field Trial

A two-phase professional field trial involving 129 dogs and 63 UK veterinary professionals, trainers and behaviourists examined real-world observations during CaniNectar use. The study included digestive, stool and behavioural measures across two independently run phases.

The research question

Real-world canine studies can provide a different type of information from tightly controlled laboratory research.

This trial asked whether professionals working directly with dogs would record consistent changes during CaniNectar use across a range of observable measures.

A particularly important feature of the study was its two-phase design.

The two phases involved different dogs and different participating professionals and were conducted months apart.

This allowed researchers to ask a useful question:

Would similar patterns appear when the trial was repeated independently in a second group of dogs?

What did the researchers do?

The professional field trial was conducted in two separate phases.

Across both phases, 129 dogs were evaluated by 63 UK veterinary professionals, trainers and behaviourists.

Independent phases

The second phase used a different group of dogs and professionals from the first phase and was conducted months later.

This provided an opportunity to examine whether patterns observed in the first phase appeared again in a separate population.

Professional observations

Participants recorded observations relating to several aspects of the dogs' everyday condition and behaviour.

These included stool quality and behavioural measures, alongside other practical observations.

Before-and-after comparison

Dogs were assessed before CaniNectar use and again during or after the study period, allowing changes in recorded scores to be examined within individual animals.

The study was designed as a professional real-world field trial rather than a placebo-controlled clinical efficacy study.

What did they measure?

The trial captured several types of professional observation.

Stool quality

Participants recorded changes in stool quality during the study period.

Behavioural scoring

Professionals also scored behavioural characteristics using structured rating scales.

Individual change

Rather than looking only at group averages, the dataset allowed researchers to examine whether individual dogs were scored as improved, unchanged or worse.

Replication between phases

Because the study was run twice using different dogs and professionals, the researchers could compare whether similar patterns appeared in both phases.

This repeated design is one of the most informative aspects of the dataset.

What was observed?

The professional trial identified several notable patterns.

Stool observations

Approximately 70% of dogs were recorded as showing improvement in stool quality during the trial.

Behavioural observations

Among dogs entering the study with elevated anxiety scores, 38 of 42 were recorded as improved, while one dog was rated worse.

Mean anxiety scores in this subgroup fell from 4.29 to 3.23 on the five-point scale used in the trial.

Replication

The behavioural pattern appeared independently in both phases.

The mean reduction in anxiety score was 1.04 points in phase one and 1.10 points in phase two.

This similarity is scientifically interesting because the second phase involved different dogs and different professionals.

These observations identify patterns within the dataset, but they do not establish a medicinal or therapeutic effect.

What does this study tell us?

The strongest feature of this trial is not any single percentage.

It is the repeated structure.

A result observed once in a field trial may reflect many influences, including the particular dogs, professionals or circumstances involved.

When a similar pattern appears again in a separately run second phase, that makes the observation more interesting and provides a stronger reason for further investigation.

The study also demonstrates the value of combining different forms of CaniNectar research.

Laboratory and microbiome studies can investigate biological mechanisms and measurable changes within the gut.

Professional field trials can ask whether consistent patterns are also observed in everyday dogs.

These are different forms of evidence, and neither should be treated as a substitute for controlled clinical research.

What doesn't this study tell us?

This was a real-world professional field trial rather than a randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study.

No placebo control

Without a placebo or untreated comparison group, changes observed during the study cannot automatically be attributed solely to CaniNectar.

Subjective measures

Several outcomes were based on professional observation and rating scales rather than objective laboratory measurements.

Although professional assessors provide useful expertise, observational scoring can still be influenced by expectation and other forms of bias.

Selected subgroups

Some reported results relate to subsets of dogs that entered the study with elevated baseline scores.

These subgroup findings should therefore not be interpreted as results applying to every dog in the trial.

Behavioural complexity

Canine behaviour is influenced by many factors, including environment, training, routine, physical state and interactions with people.

An observed change in a behavioural score does not establish why that change occurred.

Replication is not confirmation of causation

The similar results across two phases make the pattern more interesting, but replication within an uncontrolled field design does not convert an association into proof of cause and effect.

The findings are best regarded as observational evidence that supports further controlled research.
