How We Evaluate CaniNectar Research

CaniNectar research includes laboratory work, microbiome and metabolome analysis, professional field trials and real-world observations. Each type of study answers a different question, so understanding study design and limitations is essential when interpreting the evidence.

The big question

Not all research answers the same question.

A laboratory experiment can tell us something very different from a field trial.

A microbiome study can identify changes in microbial composition, while metabolomics can reveal changes in the chemical environment.

An observational study can tell us what people noticed in everyday dogs, but it cannot automatically establish why those changes occurred.

For that reason, evaluating CaniNectar research means asking more than:

Did the study produce an interesting result?

We also need to ask:

How was the study designed, what was actually measured, and what can the evidence reasonably support?

How do scientists study it?

The CaniNectar research programme uses several different types of investigation.

Laboratory research

Laboratory studies allow specific biological processes to be examined under controlled conditions.

For Enzyme Rich Malt Extract, this can include measuring enzyme activity and studying how different enzymes interact with nutrient substrates.

Microbiome research

DNA-based analysis can examine which microbial groups are present and whether their relative abundance changes over time.

Metabolome research

Metabolomic techniques measure small molecules within biological samples, providing another view of activity within the gut environment.

Professional field trials

Veterinary professionals, trainers and behaviourists can record structured observations in dogs living under normal conditions.

Working-dog trials

Studies conducted in operational environments can provide useful information about what is observed under real-world conditions.

Each approach has strengths and weaknesses.

The most useful evidence base therefore comes from considering different study types together rather than expecting one experiment to answer every question.

What can we measure?

When reviewing research, several features are especially important.

Study population

How many dogs were included, and how representative were they of the wider canine population?

Study duration

Was the research long enough to observe the type of change being investigated?

Control group

Was there a placebo, untreated or alternative-treatment comparison group?

Blinding

Did the people assessing outcomes know which intervention the dogs received?

Objective measurements

Did the study include laboratory measurements such as microbiome or metabolome analysis?

Subjective observations

Were outcomes based on owner, handler or professional assessments?

Replication

Has a similar observation appeared again in another group of dogs?

Looking at these features helps put individual findings into context.

What have we learned?

Different types of evidence have different strengths.

Controlled studies

A well-designed controlled study can provide stronger evidence about whether an intervention is associated with a particular outcome.

Laboratory studies

These can provide detailed information about mechanisms, but laboratory conditions do not perfectly reproduce what happens inside a living dog.

Microbiome and metabolome studies

These allow researchers to identify biological changes within the gut environment, but a measurable change does not automatically tell us whether it is beneficial or clinically important.

Field trials

These are useful for understanding what happens under everyday conditions, but they are more vulnerable to confounding factors and observer bias.

Repeated observations

When similar patterns appear independently in different populations, they become more interesting and provide a stronger reason for further investigation.

No single category of evidence should be treated as definitive on its own.

Why does this matter?

The CaniNectar evidence base is best understood as a collection of different pieces of information.

Laboratory research can investigate enzyme activity.

Microbiome research can examine which microorganisms are present.

Metabolomics can examine changes within the chemical environment.

Field trials can capture observations from people working directly with dogs.

Taken together, these different approaches can help researchers build a progressively richer picture of what may be happening.

That does not mean every observation has the same evidential weight.

Instead, the aim is to distinguish clearly between:

What has been measured

What has been observed

What can reasonably be inferred

What still needs further research

That distinction is central to how we present science within the CaniNectar Science Hub.

What should we keep in mind?

No evidence framework can remove uncertainty from biological research.

Dogs vary substantially between individuals.

Diet, age, environment, breed, body size, activity, medication, gastrointestinal transit and existing microbial communities can all influence study outcomes.

Different laboratory techniques can also produce different types of data.

Microbiome analysis tells us something different from metabolomics, and neither automatically explains how an individual dog feels or behaves.

Real-world observations provide valuable information, but they can be influenced by expectation and other factors.

Even statistically significant findings may not always represent biologically important effects.

For these reasons, CaniNectar research should be interpreted as an evolving body of evidence rather than as a collection of isolated claims.

Where uncertainty exists, it should remain visible.
