What Is Enzyme Rich Malt Extract?

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract is a malt-derived ingredient produced to retain naturally occurring digestive enzyme activity, making it especially relevant to research into nutrient breakdown, substrate availability and the environment encountered by the canine gut microbiome.

01

The big question

CaniNectar is built around an ingredient called Enzyme Rich Malt Extract.

But what exactly is it?

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract is a malt-derived ingredient produced using a process designed to retain naturally occurring digestive enzyme activity.

That matters because enzymes can influence how nutrients are broken down before they travel further through the digestive tract.

The central scientific question is therefore not simply what Enzyme Rich Malt Extract contains.

It is:

How might retained digestive enzyme activity influence nutrient breakdown and the material that ultimately reaches microbial communities further downstream?

02

How do scientists study it?

Malt is produced from cereal grains that have been allowed to germinate under controlled conditions.

During germination, the grain activates a range of naturally occurring enzymes that help mobilise stored nutrients.

These can include enzymes involved in the breakdown of starch, proteins and structural carbohydrates.

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract is produced from malt using a patented process designed to preserve a broad spectrum of this enzyme activity.

The resulting ingredient can therefore be studied not only as a source of nutrients, but also as a source of active digestive enzymes.

Laboratory assays can be used to measure the activity of specific enzymes within Enzyme Rich Malt Extract and to investigate how they act on different nutrient substrates.

03

What can we measure?

Several types of enzyme activity can be relevant when studying Enzyme Rich Malt Extract.

Amylase

Acts on starch and helps break it down into smaller carbohydrate components.

Protease

Acts on proteins and contributes to the breakdown of larger protein molecules.

Lipase

Acts on fats and contributes to lipid digestion.

Fructanase

Acts on fructans, a type of plant carbohydrate.

Cellulase and xylanase

Act on structural components of plant material.

Beta-glucanase

Acts on beta-glucans found in cereal cell walls.

Phytase

Acts on phytate, a phosphorus-containing compound found in plant ingredients.

The overall value of measuring these activities is to understand the range of nutrient substrates that enzymes within Enzyme Rich Malt Extract may be capable of acting upon.

04

What have we learned?

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract contains a broad spectrum of naturally occurring enzyme activity rather than relying on a single isolated enzyme.

That is important because a typical diet contains many different nutrient types.

Different enzymes act on different substrates, so the presence of multiple enzyme activities means Enzyme Rich Malt Extract can be studied across several aspects of nutrient breakdown.

The scientific interest is not simply whether enzyme activity is present.

It is whether that activity changes how much substrate is broken down earlier in the digestive tract and, in turn, what remains available later.

That links Enzyme Rich Malt Extract directly to the broader question at the centre of CaniNectar science:

What happens upstream may influence the nutritional environment downstream.

05

Why does this matter?

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract provides a practical way to explore the relationship between digestive enzyme activity and the microbial environment of the gut.

The underlying pathway is straightforward:

Enzyme Rich Malt Extract activity → Nutrient breakdown → Substrate availability → Microbiome environment

This does not mean Enzyme Rich Malt Extract determines the microbiome.

The gut is influenced by diet, the dog's own digestive system, transit time, microbial interactions and many other factors.

But it does provide a scientific mechanism through which changes in nutrient breakdown earlier in digestion could influence what is available to microorganisms further downstream.

That is why Enzyme Rich Malt Extract sits at the centre of CaniNectar's research programme.

06

What should we keep in mind?

Enzyme activity measured in a laboratory should not be assumed to translate directly into an identical effect inside a living dog.

Conditions within the gastrointestinal tract vary continuously.

pH, temperature, transit time, moisture and the composition of a meal can all influence enzyme behaviour.

Different diets also provide different amounts and types of substrate.

For those reasons, demonstrating enzyme activity is only one part of understanding Enzyme Rich Malt Extract.

Research also needs to examine what happens in vivo, including whether changes can be detected in nutrient digestion, microbial composition or the metabolome.

This is why laboratory enzyme characterisation and canine research should be viewed as complementary rather than interchangeable forms of evidence.
