Why Is My Dog Always Licking or Biting Their Paws?
Repeated paw licking can have many causes, including irritation, allergies, environmental exposure, discomfort, habit and microbial changes on the skin. The gut and skin are also connected through immune, metabolic and barrier pathways, which makes digestion and microbiome health part of the wider picture.
Occasional paw licking is completely normal.
But when a dog repeatedly licks, chews or bites their feet, especially enough to stain the fur, irritate the skin or interrupt rest, it is worth asking why.
There is no single explanation.
Paw licking can be linked to environmental irritation, allergies, pain, infection, behavioural patterns or changes in the skin's normal microbial community.
Yeasts such as Malassezia naturally live on canine skin, but under some conditions they can multiply excessively and contribute to irritation.
The gut may also be relevant.

What is happening?
The skin is an active biological barrier.
It contains immune cells, oils, structural proteins and communities of microorganisms including bacteria and yeasts.
Normally, these organisms exist as part of a balanced skin ecosystem.
Problems can arise when the environment changes.
Moisture between the toes, inflammation, allergy, altered skin oils or repeated licking can create conditions that favour microbial overgrowth.

What can you observe?
Look carefully at the pattern.
One paw or several?
Repeated licking of one foot may suggest a local problem such as pain, injury or a foreign body.
Licking several paws may point towards a broader skin or environmental issue.
Redness
Check between the toes and around the pads.
Odour
A strong, musty or “yeasty” smell can be useful information for your vet.
Brown or reddish staining
Repeated saliva exposure can discolour pale fur.
Moisture
Constant licking can leave the skin damp.
Ear problems
Paw licking and recurrent itchy or smelly ears can sometimes occur together.
Stools and digestion
Notice whether skin flare-ups seem to coincide with changes in stool quality, gas or appetite.
Seasonality
Does the problem become worse at particular times of year?
Food changes
Has licking changed after a significant dietary change?
Keeping track of these patterns can be much more useful than simply describing a dog as “itchy”.
If your dog's paws are mildly irritated, keeping them clean and dry can be a useful first step.
After muddy or wet walks, rinse away obvious dirt and dry carefully between the toes.
Avoid repeatedly applying human creams, antiseptics or antifungal products without veterinary advice.
If licking is frequent, try to identify whether the trigger appears environmental, seasonal, dietary or behavioural.
It can also be useful to monitor the wider picture:
- stool quality
- appetite
- gas
- coat condition
- ear irritation
- skin redness
- recent food changes
Do not assume that every itchy dog has a food allergy or yeast problem.
And do not assume that every yeast problem begins in the gut.
The most useful approach is to look at skin, digestion, environment and behaviour together.

Veterinary advice is particularly important if you notice:
- red or inflamed skin
- broken or bleeding skin
- swelling
- a strong or unusual odour
- discharge
- hair loss
- repeated ear irritation
- limping
- pain when the paw is touched
- persistent scratching elsewhere
- recurrent skin problems
- symptoms that repeatedly return after treatment
Yeast and bacterial overgrowth can look similar from the outside, and underlying allergy, pain or other skin disease may also be involved.
A vet can help identify what is actually driving the problem rather than treating the licking alone.
